At the gallo-romaine period, a hard core of populating is developped in right shore of the valley of Indre (gallo-romain temple of the Maussants avenue excavated in 1990, funerary monument and gallo-romain sarcophagus that we can see to the Church Saint-Etienne) in the extension of a crossing point to ford the river. In this site that Grégoire de Tours at the 6th century after J.C name "Vicus Dolensis" in locating the basilical of Saint-Ludre (actually the Church Saint-Etienne) of "Triens", gold mérovingienne money, are emitted at several times (the striking of a medal reproducing one of these moneys is possible at the tourism office).

In 917, the 2nd of September, the destiny of Déols is changed. Ebbes said le Noble, first lord of Déols, established on his lands a benedictine monastery and built his castle on the left of the Indre from 2 km. This castle will be the beginning of the town Châteauroux. By this, Ebbe acted for his lord and master Guillaume d'Aquitaine which any years ago built the Abbey of Cluny, in Saône et Loire. The two first abbots of Déols are the same than Cluny: Bernon and Odon. |

This explain the presence of vestige of the old abbey Notre-Dame de Déols at the depth of the built-up area. The only bell-tower, always present, after the secularisation of the building expected by the Prince of Condé in 1622, in side by side with the town hall erected initially in 1842 to serv of boys school. About the "Bourg de Déols", it'll take advantage of the fast rise of the abbey church Notre-Dame. The inhabitant could see go by in their streets the King Henri II Plantagenêt and his sons Richard Coeur de Lion and Jean sans Terre, and french kings: Philippe Auguste, Louis II and Charles VII named "Roi de Bourges" which came to Déols in pope residence from september 1161 to august 1162.
